Gill's Goal Lifts `Dogs Passed Vandals

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State soccer beat Idaho, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. Selena Gill scored her first goal of the season and her career. The `Dogs are now 4-1-1 in conference play and 8-8-2 overall.
"It was another tough conference battle," said head coach Steve Springthorpe. "Idaho played well and limited our opportunities offensively."
Entering halftime the score was tied at zero a piece. The `Dogs outshot Idaho seven shots to zero. Idaho goalie Liz Boyden had five big saves in the first half.
Laura Dodd scored off a pass from Ali Sill, but it was called back due to offsides. The Bulldogs had several close attempts on goal in the first half, but were unable to put the ball in the goal.
The Bulldog defense had big stops at the midfield and the Vandals did not get a shot off in the first minutes of play.
The Bulldogs continued to put pressure on the Vandal defense and it was not until the 71st minute that Fresno State scored.
Gill scored off a corner kick from Kendall VanDine. A header shot hit the post and Gill knocked into the back of the net to put the Bulldogs up, 1-0.
"We found a way to score off a corner kick," said Springthorpe. "It is all about getting results and we are happy with the result we got today."
Idaho out pressure on the Bulldog defense, but were able to record their ninth shutout of the season. Kaitlyn Revel had a single save against the Vandals.
"The defense played well and limited Idaho to one shot," said Springthorpe. "The backline played really well."
Fresno State outshot Idaho 16-1 and nine of the shots were on goal.
Nicole Gutierrez and Molly Nizzoli continued to pressure offensively in the final minutes of play.
The Bulldogs have a two-game winning streak heading into the last weekend of conference play. The `Dogs host Nevada on Sunday Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. in Bulldog stadium. It is senior night and an autograph session will follow the conclusion of the game.
