FRESNO, Calif. - Selena Gill was named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 27 - 31. It marks the second time this season Gill has received the award and the fourth time a Bulldog has earned Player of the Week honors in 2008.
Gill led Fresno State to its eighth and ninth shutout of the season. She also helped the Bulldog defense hold Idaho to just one shot in a 1-0 win over the Vandals. The mark stands as a conference best in shots given up in WAC matches.
"Selena has had a great last couple of weeks organizing and leading our defense," said head coach Steve Springthorpe. "Our success the second half of the season can be attributed to our whole team playing better defense by saying that, Selena has stepped up her play and has shown great leadership back there."
The senior also registered the game-winning goal from her defensive position to lift the Bulldogs over Idaho.
"Her goal on Sunday helped us get the win against Idaho," said Springthorpe. "We are honored to have one of our players be selected by the WAC as the Player of the Week."
Gill and the Bulldogs wrap up conference play against Nevada Sunday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium. Join the Bulldogs for senior day and autographs following the conclusion of the game.
