Three `Dogs Advance to Quarters at Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. -
The 15th annual Bulldog Classic is underway at the Wathen Tennis Center, on the campus of Fresno State University. The Fresno State men's tennis team completed their first day of competition during the fall season.
Three Bulldogs will play in quarterfinal action Saturday. Rikus DeVilliers, picked up a victory in the first round of the A-draw 7-6(4), 7-5, then went on to win his second match, 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-4.
"I felt uncomfortable out there at first," said Devilliers, "I fought through it, and felt much better as the match went on."
Competing in the B-draw, Flavio Mollinedo cruised to a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals with straight set victories of 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2.
"I have a lot of condfidence in my singles play right now," Mollinedo said. "I was relaxed and my stroke was flowing."
Taylor Leiby will join Mollinedo in the quarterfinals of the B-draw after he picked up two victories in his first action of the 2008 fall season. Leiby won his first match 6-4, 6-4 and went on to win his second match 6-3, 6-3.
Bulldog freshman Remi Boutillier picked up a win in the first round of the B-draw in a hard fought three set match 4-6, 7-6, 6-1. He was then knocked out in the second round after a 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 battle.
In doubles action Boutillier and Devilliers teamed up in the A-draw to pick up a win 8-3.
"It was nice to get some good match play for our team," Head Coach Jay Udwadia said. "It is the first event for most of the athletes and we're excited to be able to watch three of our guys continue their strong play in the quarters."
The Bulldog Classic resumes Saturday at the Wathen Tennis Center.
