FRESNO, Calif. - Rudolf Siwy, Mirko Zapletal, and Tejesvi Veerepalli sat out of the 15th Annual Bulldog Classic this weekend. The trio weren't avoiding competition, rather they were preparing for the ITA All-American qualifying rounds that began Monday.
The Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa, home of the 2008 NCAA Tennis Championships, will host both the qualifying and main draws of the ITA All-American Tournament. In order to advance to the main draw, players must win three straight matches in the qualifying rounds.
Each Bulldog played one match Monday, with matches continuing Tuesday. Doubles action will begin Tuesday.
Siwy, ranked No. 48 in singles, began the day with a match against Boris Fetbroyt of Maryland. Siwy controlled the match throughout and picked up a straight set victory 6-3, 6-1 to advance to Tuesday's second round and one step closer to the main draw.
"Every match here is tough," Head Coach Jay Udwadia said. "Everyone looks to be in good form, and I am anxious to see how we compete tomorrow in both singles and doubles."
No. 85 Zapletal started his quest for the main draw against Andrew Orban of Maryland. Zapletal took the first set 6-4. Orban tried to force a third set, as he led the second set 5-2. The Bulldog junior would storm back winning five straight games to take the set and the match 6-4, 7-5.
Veerepalli faced off against No. 47 Clint Bowles of Florida State in his first round match. Veerepalli battled but was unable to take down Bowles, who went on to win the match 6-1, 6-3.
The `Dogs will continue play Tuesday. Siwy and Zapletal will compete in the second round of singles, and will start doubles play against Carlsson/Skupski of LSU. Veerepalli will compete in the consolation round.
