'Dogs Rally to Finish First

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State had three members of its five-player team shoot under par and finish in the Top 10 individually on day one of the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., on Monday. As a team, the Bulldogs rallied after a slow start to end the day in first place.
The Bulldogs finished with a five-under par round of 279 and are just four strokes in front of second place finisher Rice. Fresno State beat out the other 11 teams in the field including two schools ranked in the Top 50.
The team is four-strokes ahead of No. 49 Kansas State who is currently tied for fourth and is 11-strokes ahead of No. 15 UC Davis who is currently tied for eighth.
Grant Doverspike birdied holes 7, 9, 10, 11, and 13 to help the team extend their lead. He shot a 66 and is the leader of the tournament by three-strokes. Matt Ryan was four-over after the first five holes before he then made two birdies and a bogey to shoot a first round score of 70 and finish in a tie for sixth.
Bryan Hogan also had a great round of golf, tying for sixth and shooting one-under par. Todd Angel finished tied for 26th on the day at two-over and a score of 73.
"We had some very solid scores," head Coach Mike Watney said. "It was pretty windy and our guys hit some clutch shots in bad weather conditions. There is a lot of golf left and we know that teams will be firing after us, so we just have to maintain our composer."
Michael Gideon, who did not figure in the team scoring Monday, shot an 84.
The Bulldogs will begin teeing off the first hole at 9:18 Pacific Time on Tuesday for the second round and will be playing with Rice and Oregon. Live statistics will be available at Golfstat.com. The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes Wednesday.
