Bulldogs Complete First Day at ASU Invite

FRESNO, Calif. - While half of the Fresno State women's tennis team is competing at the ITA National Indoor Championships, the rest of the Bulldogs finished the first day of competition at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
Senior Bruna Paes picked up a victory in her first round match against Sianna Simmons of Arizona State 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5). Paes then faced off against Marion Ravelojaona of Cal. Paes and Ravelojaona engaged in a hard fought match, but Paes would drop the contest 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles action, freshman Abigail Olivier teamed up with Paes to defeat Dillon/Chang of Cal 9-8. Danon Beatty and Laura Pola faced off against Tatusno/Howard of Michigan. The Michigan tandem took the match from the Bulldogs 8-4.
"This is a good tournament, and a great opportunity to play some tough matches," said assistant coach Laura Gordon. "It was good for everyone to be able to work on their game in a competitive setting and get ready for the dual match season."
The Bulldogs will be back on the court Saturday as Paes will take on Denise Muresan of Michigan. Beatty will battle Amanda Martin of Arizona State, while Pola is matched up with Carling Seguso of UCLA and Olivier will face Samantha Mouly of San Diego.
The `Dogs will also continue doubles play with Olivier/Paes going up against Taney/Muresan of Michigan, while Beatty and Pola will take on Coupez/Mouley of San Diego.
Saturday's doubles matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. PST, with singles matches to follow.
