FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's basketball team had a history making year last season after winning the WAC league title, WAC Tournament title and making the program's first NCAA tournament appearance. This year is no different as the `Dogs are looking to shatter personal and team records.
After beating Cal State Northridge the Bulldogs earned their 13th straight win at home and are three wins away from tying the previous record of 16-straight wins at home set in the 2005-06 season.
"It was important to play well tonight and it was a nice thing to see coming off a loss," said head coach Adrian Wiggins. "It was good to see the players play with that kind of energy and focus."
The Bulldogs knocked in 68 points with three players recording 12 points apiece, but it was the defense that shined against the Matadors. Fresno State gave up only 29 points to the Matadors, the fewest points allowed by a Bulldog team since 1974-75 when Cal Poly scored only 22 points.
"We were very pleased with our defensive efforts tonight and we were pressuring the ball well," said Wiggins. "I felt like we got better and that was nice and refreshing to see. On top of that we got a lot of assist tonight and we seemed to share the ball well."
The same day the Fresno State women's basketball team earned their 13th straight home win, the team also received five votes for USA Today's Top 25 poll.
"We're excited," Wiggins said. "It's a great compliment it's not our only goal. But it's a great stop along the way. It is very encouraging for the players, we needed a little confidence and it was a nice confidence boost."
This is the fourth time that the team has received votes in the USA Today poll. All three previous rankings came in the 1987 season. The Bulldogs have also been recognized in the Associated Press Top 25 twice, once in 1987 when they were ranked 23rd and again in 2006.
