The Bulldogs downed the Aggies 10-5. Fresno State and New Mexico State are the only two WAC schools to sponsor Equestrian as a varsity sport. The Dogs used a strong performance by the English squad, which won seven of eight matches.
The Aggies and Auburn finished a first-bracket round on Saturday and will conclude that match on Sunday morning. Fresno State will host Auburn on Sunday at 9 a.m. for the final home match of the season.
Leading the way for the Dogs were freshmen, Asheline Beeson and Mallory Hames, who each won MVP honors in their respective events. Beeson carried the day in Western Horsemanship with a strong ride of 74 on Ryon. Hames, who according to head coach Becky Malmo is already competing at a high national level, had the top score in Equitation on the Flat, with a 74 on Mistral.
In all, the Dogs won three of four matches in the Flat, as Kelsey Bullock and Caitlin Marshall also secured wins over their New Mexico State competitors.
"The depth of our English team continues to be impressive," said Malmo. "I'm thrilled with Jennifer Jory's performance. For Asheline Beeson to be and MVP in just her third college event is a tremendous accomplishment. The Horsemanship ladies were very diligent all week in our training sessions. We rode hard and studied a lot of video tape and it paid off. The gals were all strong today. We had a great day with great support from booster club, parents and fans and looking forward to another great day tomorrow against Auburn."
The Dogs earned two team points in Horsemanship. In addition to Beeson's win, Adriane Smith won her match, while Kelsi Fischer scored a 71 on Zena to tie her match. Despite a solid ride and a score of 68 on Fiero, junior Rebecca Flood, who's been outstanding all season, dropped her match to Aggie rider Rachael Krause.
The Dogs swept in Fences, winning all four matches. Jennifer Jory was the MVP of the event with a score of 81, but all four Bulldog riders scored a 78 or higher. Also winning matches were Cambria Kissell (80), Katie Nenneker (78) and Lisa Wells (78). Jory's MVP honor was her first of the season all four fences competitor have now been selected MVP during matches this season.
Nenneker, a junior captain, is extremely pleased with the team's work ethic.
"This shows that all of our hard work is paying off," Nenneker said. "This was a big day. New Mexico State is a good team and rival for us. We got off to a good start and kept going throughout the day. We are really pumped for tomorrow and competing against a team like Auburn. This should give us some good momentum. The season has been going well. I'm really proud of all of the girls for working so hard. We are showing that all of our hard work in practice is paying off for us."
The Dogs picked up one win in Reining as Shellie Dalluge scored a 70 to win her match over New Mexico State's Bryn Wells.
Sunday's event begins at 9 a.m. at the Student Horse Center on the Fresno State campus.
