Melloh Shuts Out No. 8 Oklahoma

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Morgan Melloh had seven strikeouts and her ninth shutout of the year as she improves to 14-3 and the No. 18/21 Bulldogs improve to 23-5 after a 1-0 victory over No. 8/11 Oklahoma Thursday night at Bulldog Diamond.
Melloh threw her 15th complete game of the season and earned the win after allowing only three hits. The Bulldogs lost two-straight games before tonight, both to No. 14 Houston, a 3-0 game on Sunday and a 1-0 loss in 10 innings to the Cougars on Tuesday.
Savannah Long hit a double to left center for the first hit of the game and she would be left on for the Sooners in the top of the first.
Fresno State would get a lead off hit by Haley Perkins in the bottom of the first. Caitlin Stiglich would reach first on a fielder's choice and with two outs Aja Scheuber would walk to put runners on first and second, but the Bulldogs would leave two on.
Andrea Ortega, the freshman left fielder, led off the bottom of the second with a walk after a shot past third base that went into the corner that was just foul. Fellow freshman Nicole Angene would follow with a single to right field.
Lisamarie Coronado would hit a sacrifice and move runners to second and third with two outs. Fresno State would leave two on base again. Stiglich would get hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the third. Scheuber followed with a blooper to right center. Michelle Palazuelos would pinch run for Stiglich.
The runners would advance on a ground out and Ortega was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. The Bulldogs would leave the bases loaded.
Amber Flores walked to start the top of the fourth for Oklahoma but the Bulldogs would turn a double play and Melloh would force a foul out to left field to end the inning.
Jadyn Smith would enter the game on the mound in the bottom of the fourth for the Sooners, replacing starting pitcher D.J. Mathis.
Melloh would lead off the fourth with a single to center field and Mallory Perkins would enter to pinch run. The Bulldogs would hit into a double play and have one hit and none left.
Gilleland hit an infield single to lead off the fifth for the Bulldogs and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Caitlin Stiglich.
Scheuber would draw the walk and with one out the Bulldogs yet again had runners on first and second. Fresno State would advance runners to second and third but get no runs across.
The Bulldogs would end up leaving nine runners on base in the first five innings.
A single to center by Angene lead off the six for Fresno State and a single to right by Melloh followed, as both picked up their second hits of the game.
Oklahoma would then bring in its third pitcher of the game as Lauren Eckermann entered with no outs.
Coronado would hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Angene and Melloh to second and third. After Angene was picked off at third base, Perkins hit a single to center field which scored Melloh from second to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.
Fresno State had eight hits in the game, led by Haley Perkins, Melloh and Angene all with two each.
The Bulldogs now have an overall 11-7 series lead over Oklahoma. It was the first meeting between the two schools in two years. The Sooners are now 21-6 on the year.
