FRESNO, Calif.- - Tierre Wilson has signed a WNBA free agent contract with the Washington Mystics. She is the first Bulldog to sign with a WNBA team and she reports to camp on April 20.
"It feels good," Wilson said. "At the beginning of the year I didn't want to pursue a professional basketball. I just wanted to be a regular person. Now that it is here I am not going to turn down the opportunity. I'll take it and go. Washington has guards but they are not stacked. This will be a good opportunity for me."
Last year Washington finished the season 16-18 and just missed the playoffs. The Mystics are coached by 18-year NBA veteran Tree Rollins. Washington had the sixth pick in this year's WNBA draft and they drafted Crystal Langhorne from Maryland. Other notable players on the roster are Alana Beard from Duke and Delisha Milton-Jones.
"We are excited for Tierre as she begins her professional basketball career with the Washington Mystics," Fresno State women's basketball coach Adrian Wiggins said. "She will make a great pro player. She has been one of the hardest working players I have coached and I know that work ethic will carry over into her professional career."
This year Wilson helped lead Fresno State to the best season in program history as the Bulldogs went 22-11 and won the programs first ever conference championship, tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time program history. She was named WAC Player of the Year and First Team All-WAC. She also earned WAC All-Tournament Team honors and just recently earned AP Honorable Mention All-American honors.
Wilson averaged 15.6 points this year and she will leave Fresno State as the fifth All-Time leading scorer in school history.
