RENO, NV- - The Fresno State baseball team got strong pitching from Justin Wilson and Clayton Allison but the two pitchers still earned the no decision as the Bulldogs dropped a doubleheader on Saturday, losing game 1, 4-1 and game 2, 7-3.
Despite the two losses, Fresno State still is in first place in the WAC with a 14-5 record and a 26-19 overall mark while Nevada improved to 24-18 and 11-8 in WAC.
The Bulldogs had 15 hits in the two games, led by Danny Muno and Erik Wetzel's three. Ryan Overland and Gavin Hedstrom each had two hits. Hedstrom has now tied his teammate Steve Susdorf for the longest hitting streak in the WAC as he has hit successfully in 15 straight games. Susdorf's 15-game hitting streak came to an end last weekend at New Mexico State.
Allison pitched 6 2/3 innings in the second game, allowing three runs and striking out three. In game 1 Wilson tossed seven innings, striking out four and allowing only three hits.
Game 1
The first game of the double header was a pitcher's duel as Nevada pitcher Kyle Howe pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out five to lead the Wolf Pack to the 4-1 victory. Wilson got the no decision as he tossed seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out four.
The Wolf Pack scored a run in the first inning and maintained the slim lead until the Bulldogs tied the game in the seventh. Tommy Mendonca singled to right field with one out and advanced to second after Danny Grubb walked. Mendonca would score the tying run off a single to center field by Muno.
Tyson Jaquez knocked in the winning runs for Nevada on a three run homerun in the eighth to give the Pack the 4-1 advantage.
Fresno State had seven hits for the game led by Muno's three and one RBI. Nevada had six hits. The loss ended Fresno State's 11-game conference winning streak.
Game 2
After Nevada struck first in the first inning with one run, the Bulldogs came back with two runs in the second and one in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
In the second inning, Alan Ahmady walked and Steve Detwiler was hit by a pitch. Jake Johnson then doubled down the left field line, scoring Ahmady to tie the game at one. Grubb then plated Detwiler on a sacrifice fly to give Fresno State the 2-1 lead.
In the third, Hedstrom singled to center field and Wetzel singled to right to open the inning. Susdorf then singled home Hedstrom for the Dogs only run of the inning.
But Nevada wouldn't die as they scored one run in the fifth and then they took the lead in the seventh with three runs to lead 5-3. The Wolf Pack added two more in the eighth to take the 7-3 lead. Fresno State had eight hits in the game, led by Wetzel's two.
The four-game series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
