Success Continues for Bulldog Track & Field

FRESNO, Calif. -
Both of Fresno State's track and field teams continued to build on their early season successes as they powered through the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif.
Senior Meredith Hawkins became the first female Bulldog runner to run a regional qualifying mark in the 3,000m steeplechase. On the men's side, Val-Pierre Dai'Re continued to improve, bettering his qualifying mark significantly.
Sharon Ayala took silver, gold among collegiate competitors, in the hammer throw, with a toss of 195-8 (59.63m). Grace Weismann placed eighth overall, with a mark of 171-0 (52.12m). Lisa Ma'ake had a career-best day in the shot put, throwing 42-11.50 (13.09m) for sixth place.
Brooke Pighin placed third in the javelin with a mark of 138-2 (42.12m), just ahead of Jackie Vazquez's fifth place, personal-best of 133-5 (40.67m).
Leshay Dorsey cleared 5-1 (1.55m) in the high jump for eighth. Shay Miles earned a tenth place finish in the triple jump at 36-10.5 (11.24m).
Both intermediate hurdlers, T'Shara Hicks and Erica McCoy improved their best marks in the 400-meter hurdles. Hicks had with an eighth place finish at 1:02.59 while McCoy took tenth at 1:03.45.
Tierra Hilliard ran a personal-best of 24.45 in the 200m dash, taking seventh. Rayna White ran a 25.54 in the 200m dash, for tenth, just ahead of Katrina Arnold at 25.65 for eleventh. Hawkins took third and registered a personal-best in the 3,000m steeplechase at 10:42.33, well under the regionally-qualifying mark. Marina Santana timed in at 2:14.06 in the 800m run to take fifth. Brianna Cleary and Hawkins came in ninth and tenth, respectively, each finishing in just under 4:45.
Both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams placed fourth.
Gary Lee led the men as he continued to dominate the long jump with a first place finish at 24-3.50 (7.40m). Erik Fossen earned bronze in the triple jump, leaping 47-9.25 (14.56m).
Vazquez championed the hammer throw at 204-6 (62.33m). Chris Witscher came in seventh with a mark of 179-11 (54.84m) and Raul Gonzales took tenth at 161-6 (49.22m). Witscher led the Bulldogs in the discus with a personal-best toss of 156-5 (47.69m). Gonzales placed eighth with a distance of 151-3 (46.10m).
Oscar Rodriguez took second in the shot put, throwing a 55-4.75 (16.88m). Matt Ramos placed tenth with a 42-7 (12.98m).
Dai'Re bettered his regional qualifying time in the 400m hurdles with a bronze finish at 51.80. Freshman Kendrick Young clocked in at 53.31 for seventh in the 400m hurdles and then took eighth in the 110m hurdles at 15.01.
Juan Valdez came in second in the 200m dash, clocking in at 22.19. Quinton O'Neal's 22.71 earned him a fifth place finish. Dai'Re ran a 48.20 in the 400m dash for fifth and a personal-best. Darryl Miller's 48.53 tied his personal-best on the season, putting him in tenth.
Erick Garcia led the Fresno State distance runners, winning the 5,000m run at 14:57.52.
Reigning WAC Track Athlete of the Week, Frank Sanders, put in solid performances over the weekend. Sanders championed the 1,500m run at 3:47.88 and then took fourth in the 800m at 1:52.10.
The Bulldog's 4x400m relay team took fourth with a season-best of 3:14.26.
Fresno State will compete at both the Modesto Relays and the Payton Jordan Invitational over the coming weekend.
