FRESNO, Calif. -
Fresno State picked up some strokes Tuesday in the second round of the 47th annual Western Athletic Conference Championships. The Bulldogs improved with scores of 305-296 - 601 at the 6,853-yard, par-72 Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose, Calif. The Bulldogs trail New Mexico State by 13-strokes and Boise State by ten heading into the third and final round.
Freshman Grant Doverspike rose to the occasion being one of three to shoot the low round 70 to tie for second place. The defending champion is tied with Boise State's Matt Hastings at one-under par 143 trailing the leader, Boise State's Troy Merritt by five strokes. Merritt, the nation's scoring leader with a 69.22 stroke average coming into the WAC championship, has won the past four tournaments he has played and six overall during the 2007-08 season, giving Doverspike a challenge in the third round.
"It was a rudely difficult day on the golf course," said Mike Watney. "Anyone that shot par or better today played fantastic golf. The difficulty spread the field and we were looking forward to that to pick up strokes. Thirteen strokes is tough but it is doable, it will take a great round from the team to do that."
Todd Angel made a significant move on the leaderboard after firing a second round 71. Angel is tied for ninth place with six-over par 150. Matt Ryan is tied for 16th place with scores of 76-77 - 153 (+7) followed by Michael Gideon. Gideon is in 20th place with 77-78 - 155 (+11). Brad Wyatt is tied for 29th place with 80-79 - 159 (+15).
On the team leaderboard, Louisiana Tech (613) is in fourth place. Nevada and host San Jose State are tied for fifth at 615 followed by Idaho (621), Utah State (627) and Hawai`i (633).
The three-day tournament concludes on Wednesday with final-round tee times beginning at 7:00 a.m.
