Ruston, La.- After winning its third straight WAC baseball title, the Fresno State baseball team was recognized for their efforts Wednesday night when it was announced that Steve Susdorf was named WAC Player of the Year, Tanner Scheppers WAC Pitcher of the Year, Danny Muno WAC Freshman of the Year and coach Mike Batesole was WAC Co-Coach of the Year.
Fresno State also had five players earn First-Team All-WAC accolades in Susdorf, Scheppers, Erik Wetzel, Alan Ahmady and Brandon Burke.
Susdorf, who was the tabbed as the Preseason WAC Player of the Year lived up to his billing during the season as hit .398 during conference play with seven homeruns and 47 RBIs. He also had 15 doubles and a slugging percentage of .707. Susdorf has earned First Team All-WAC honors three straight years and is the third Bulldog in the last five years to earn WAC Player of the Year honors as Richie Robnett earned the award in 2004 and Christian Vitters in 2006.
Scheppers went 5-1 in conference games with a 3.96 era. In 38 and 2/3 innings he struck out a league best 65 batters during WAC play. He finished the year with an overall record of 8-2. Scheppers is a two-time First Team All-WAC member and he is the third Bulldog pitcher to be named WAC Pitcher of the Year.
Muno started all 32 games in conference play, hitting .341 with two homeruns, 13 RBIs while walking a team-best 27 times. He was a fixture at short stop during the season where he came up with nice defensive stops for the Dogs. For the season he hit .327 and walked a team-best 41 times.
Danny Muno was named WAC Freshman of the Year. |
This is the second straight year Wetzel has earned First-Team All-WAC honors. This year he hit .376 in conference while leading the league in runs scored with 49 in conference games and 78 overall. Wetzel was a staple at second base all season for the Bulldogs.
Burke, who earned Second Team All-WAC honors as a junior, became the schools' career save leader with 18 after recording his fifth save in conference and seventh of the season against Sacramento State on Sunday.
Ahmady had the third best batting average in WAC play at .420. The Bulldog sophomore hit eight homeruns and 48 RBIs in conference play. He played and started all 32 games at first base where he committed no errors.
