FRESNO, Calif. - Head coach Angie Cates and the Fresno State women's golf team held its fourth annual end of the year banquet before heading into the postseason. The 2008 WAC Coach of the Year handed out team awards and bid farewell to the first recruits that helped build the program, seniors Laura Luethke and Marissa Patterson.
It was no surprise when Luethke was named the Most Valuable Player on the 2007-08 squad for the fourth consecutive year. Luethke helped build the foundation for women's golf at Fresno State and is responsible for writing the record book. Luethke, a four time First Team All-WAC selection and the 2008 WAC Champion has won five career tournaments at Fresno State.
The Most Improved award went to freshman Chelsea Czinski who had a dramatic turnaround over winter break. In the spring season Czinski joined the line-up and became the no. five player for the Bulldogs shooting a low round of 76.
Hali Coppin averaged 76 strokes per round in the spring and consistently put up impressive final rounds to earn her the team's Most Consistent award. Coppin fired a hole-in-one at the Peg Barnard Collegiate and shot a low round of 71 at the UNLV Spring Invitational
The Bulldog Award is for the player who has the best attitude. Pia Escandon received the award for her positive attitude and her appreciativeness toward Fresno State.
The Top Dog award goes to the person who exemplifies what it means to be a student athlete. Taylor Siebert earned the award after playing in 30 competitive rounds for the Bulldogs and her scores were used 93 percent of the time. The Second Team All-WAC selection also earned a 3.7 and 3.8 GPA in her last two semesters. Siebert's season was highlighted with her first career win at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The 2008 WAC Champions continue into the postseason at the NCAA Western Regional May 8-10. The Bulldogs will compete at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club to advance to the NCAA Championships.
