Ayala, Lee Set to Compete at NCAA

FRESNO, Calif. - The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship are underway. Fresno State will be represented by three athletes in the meet, two competing Wednesday.
The lone men's competitor, Gary Lee, will compete in the long jump today at 1:30 p.m. PST. The freshman earned an automatic qualifying bid to the championship with his fourth-place finish at the NCAA West Regionals on May 30. Lee is scheduled to compete as the sixth competitor in the first of two flights. His personal best 25-6.25 (7.78m) is among the top 20 in the field.
Also competing Wednesday will be junior Sharon Ayala. Ayala, the Fresno State hammer throw record holder, competes today at 11:30 a.m. PST. Ayala won an at-large bid to the meet with her personal-best mark of 203-4 (61.98m). Twenty-nine women will compete in the event with Ayala throwing in the third spot in the second flight.
Both events will take the top 12 marks to a final immediately following the conclusion of the preliminaries.
The third Bulldog representing Fresno State at the NCAA Championship Meet will be Rosario Sanchez. Sanchez won't take the field until Thursday when the women's shot put is set to compete. Sanchez placed fourth at the NCAA West Regional with a personal-best throw of 52-5.25 (15.98m) to win an automatic bid to the championship.
