Mendonca to Play for USA National Team

FRESNO, Calif. - After being named the 2008 College World Series MVP, Fresno State third baseman Tommy Mendonca has been added to the USA Baseball National Team. Mendonca joined the team Saturday in Durham, North Carolina for a six-game series with Chinese-Taipei.
Mendonca is playing with other college players from schools like Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Florida, Missouri and Tennessee.
He has already played in two games where he has helped lead the Americans to 7-3 and 12-1 victories over the Chinese Taipei team. Mendonca started both games at third base and went 1 for 3 and scored one run in the 7-3 win and went 1 for 4 while scoring one run in the 12-1 victory.
Mendonca hit .285 (83-for-291) with 19 home runs, 70 RBI and eight doubles for College World Series champion Fresno State this season. He tallied 150 total bases for a .515 slugging percentage and committed only 11 errors in 77 games for a .947 fielding percentage. Mendonca led the Bulldogs to a 47-31 record; Fresno State was 14-4 in postseason play, including a 6-0 mark in elimination games en route to becoming the lowest seed to win an NCAA Championship.
