FRESNO, Calif. - Think the summer is all fun and play for the Fresno State Bulldogs? Think again. Head coach Jay Udwadia will be hard at work this summer in more ways than one. Udwadia will coach the New York Buzz of the World Team Tennis league this off-season in Albany, N.Y.
Udwadia will lead a team filled with highly-ranked ATP and WTA players from July 3-23. Udwadia and the Buzz will play some tough competition, including teams like Washington which boasts eight-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. Other household names against whom the Buzz will battle include the Bryan Brothers, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Anna Kournikova and many others.
"It's an honor to have the opportunity to coach with and against some of the best players in the world," Udwadia said. "The format and atmosphere of the matches will be very exciting. Normally there is a period of coaching-withdrawal during the summer months, so it will be nice to get the competitive juices flowing again."
Udwadia will also coach the coach the NorCal section team at the USTA Team Nationals in Urbana, Ill., for the second year in a row. He will take the best players from the section to the national championship event to compete against the best juniors in the country.
"The NorCal section has some of the best talent in the country," said Udwadia. "It's a privilege to be coaching them at such a great event again. I look forward to taking a solid team over to the National Team Championships this summer."
