FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State men's tennis coach Jay Udwadia announced the hiring of Lee Nickell as assistant coach.
Nickell comes to Fresno State after serving as an assistant coach for the past four years at the University of Alabama, where he helped the Tide reach the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
"It's great to get someone with Lee's experience and enthusiasm to work with our program," Udwadia said. "He's worked with highly nationally ranked teams at Alabama, including a Sweet 16 Appearance at the NCAA tournament. I am very excited to have him help lead the Bulldogs to the next level."
While at Alabama, Nickell worked toward building tennis in the Tuscaloosa community as he donated his time during the week to teach underprivileged youth the game of tennis with the hope of getting more people involved in the game of tennis and encouraging the community to build a new public tennis facility.
Before joining Alabama, Nickell worked for four years at several clubs and tennis centers in the Southeast as a tennis professional. He was Head Tennis Pro and Director of Junior Development at Hendersonville Racquet Club and Tennis Pro at Cherokee Tennis Center in Woodstock, Ga.
A Marist High School graduate, Nickell played collegiate tennis at Furman University. A four-year letterman and three-time All-Southern Conference selection, Nickell earned back-to-back all-conference honors in singles in 1999 and 2000. In 2000, he earned his first all-conference doubles nod after posting a 23-8 record.
Nickell earned a degree in Health and Exercise Science from Furman in 2001.
