FRESNO, Calif. - The 2007-08 Fresno State women's basketball team had a history making season on the basketball floor as they won the programs first ever WAC championship and went to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history.
While the Bulldogs were making an impact on the basketball floor they were also making an impact around the Fresno community as they participated in 463.50 service hours over the course of the school year.
Some of the activities the women's basketball team performed were speaking to kids on the importance of being good students, helping elementary school children in a Jump Rope for Heart, teaching kids basketball skills and helping young women with goal setting and self improvement.
"It is always a fun experience," said former Fresno State women's basketball player Erica Henry. "When I help people, I like to see them smile and happy when I am leave. My favorite was when we went to elementary schools because they really look up to student athletes. I feel like I can be a role model to them."
With the amount of community service performed during the 2007-08 year, the women's basketball team garnered several awards by the athletic department. Recently the team received the Bulldog Bowl award for winning the CHAMPS/Life Skills Cup.
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Cup is awarded to the team that earns the most points during the academic year. Points were based on community service, personal development, career development, athletic excellence and academic excellence.
Back in May the team won the Athletic Directors Community Service Award at the Night of Champions Banquet.
"This is an awesome honor for our program," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "It is important to us that our student athletes become active members of our community. Fresno and the Central Valley have been so wonderful to us over the years and we feel it is our responsibility to give back to this great community."
Along with the competition among Fresno State teams, next year the CHAMPS/Life Skills Cup will expand to being a competition among WAC schools.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The first Big Ten team will travel to the Valley on September 13th as the No. 25 `Dogs take on Wisconsin in the home opener at 7:30 pm.
