FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team was back in action on Saturday at the Cal Nike Invitational. Danon Beatty continued to stay unbeaten in the singles portion of the blue bracket as Abigail Olivier knocked off No. 22 Claire Ilcinkas of Cal in the gold consolation bracket.
In quarterfinal play of the gold bracket, both Melanie Gloria and Anastasia Petukhova fought hard matches, but were both unable to capture victories. Gloria dropped a tough three set match to No. 65 Bojana Bobusic of Cal 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Petukhova forced a tiebreaker in the first set, but Alexandra Poorta of St. Mary's took the match 7-6(1), 6-1.
"Both Gloria and Petukhova are disappointed they won't be able to continue in the tournament," Head Coach Simon Thibodeau said. "It was good for them to play some good competition before they represent Fresno State in the All-American tournament next week."
Beatty continued stellar singles play as she beat Sianna Simmons of Arizona State 6-1, 6-0 to earn a spot in Sunday's semifinals of the blue bracket.
"Danon is playing with a lot of confidence," said Thibodeau. "She's playing mistake-free tennis, which is making her very tough to beat."
Olivier picked up a big victory over No. 22 Claire Ilcinkas of Cal in the gold consolation bracket 6-3, 6-1, as fellow Bulldog freshman Laura Pola won a super tie-breaker to defeat Molly Aloia 4-6, 7-5, 10-4.
Bruna Paes dropped her first singles match of the day against Aileen Tsan of Sacramento State 6-2, 6-1. Paes was successful in doubles, as she teamed up with Pola to advance to the semifinals of the blue doubles bracket with a win over Nezhura/Arens of Pacific 8-5. In the semis Paes/Pola were defeated by Brown/Simmons of Arizona State 8-6.
In the doubles gold bracket Beatty/Olivier matched up against Bobusic/Juricova of Cal in the quarterfinals. The Cal duo defeated the `Dogs 8-3.
Beatty, Olivier, and Pola will be back on the court Sunday. Beatty will be featured in the semifinals of the blue bracket, while Olivier will be playing in the semifinals of the gold consolation bracket. Pola will be competing in the semifinals of the blue consolation bracket.
