FRESNO, Calif. - The 3rd Annual Run For The Dream track and field meet will be held at the Save Mart Center on Monday, Jan. 19, beginning with the University Division at 9 a.m. The Cal-Nevada High School Division and the Elite Competition will then follow, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
All running events will be held at the Save Mart Center along with the pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump for each of the three meets. The high school and university shot put events along with the university weight throw events will be held at the Livestock Pavilion on the Fresno State campus.
Former Fresno State Director of Track and Field Bob Fraley is in his third year as Director of the Run For The Dream. Fraley was instrumental in building the reputation of pole vault across the world along with promoting the sport of track and field for several decades.
"In the San Joaquin Valley we have had a great heritage of track," Fraley said. "World record holders, Olympians and NCAA Champions have all been bred here in the Valley and we are honoring those people. It's a great opportunity and a great arena to showcase our sport. The sport has made a huge impact on people and changed lives."
The Fresno State women's indoor track and field team will compete against USC, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State L.A. and Cal State Stanislaus. Members of the Fresno State men's team will compete unattached.
"It's a great event for a great cause," said head track and field coach Scott Winsor. "It's my first meet with both the men and women and my first opportunity to get to watch them compete so I am very excited."
The Elite Division consists of 11 athletes, both men and women who have competed in previous Olympic Games for various countries. Some of those athletes include: Amy Acuff (high jump), Stacey Dragila (pole vault) and Tim Mack (pole vault).
"These elite athletes have several Olympic medals and world records between them," Fraley added. "Each of these athletes is really talented and it should make for a really enjoyable meet."
The 1964 Fresno State Men's Track and Field National Championship Team will be honored at the event.
In 2008 the track used for the event was built due thanks to a $1 million donation by Fred Arnold.
