FRESNO, Calif. - School is back in session and the Fresno State golf teams are swinging back into action with practices beginning next week. The spring season tournaments will begin in February for both teams.
The men's golf team will open the spring season at the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational on Feb. 4-6. The men will host their annual Fresno State Lexus Classic March 9-10 at Belmont Country Club in Fresno. The only home tournament of the year has a field of 18 will be highlighted by teams of great caliber such as Oklahoma, Arizona State, BYU and Washington.
"I'm always happy about starting a new semester but this spring has me really excited," said men's coach Mike Watney. "We have a solid veteran lineup plus we've added one more outstanding player. Bhavik Patel, a recruit from Bakersfield, is only a freshman but very well might jump right into the starting lineup."
"People need to watch these guys now because one or more of them will probably be on the PGA Tour sometime in the future."
The men's golf team looks forward to a strong spring season after competing hard and progressing through the fall. The fall was highlighted by a third place tie at the Pacific Invitational. Junior Grant Doverspike had his second top five finish of the season and his best with a tie for second place during the tournament.
"Grant [Doverspike], Bryan Hogan, Todd Angel, and Matt Ryan are all averaging 72 or better after 4 tournaments. Michael Gideon, Brian Sunker, Brad Wyatt, Cory Bischel, and now Bhavik Patel can all take it deep under par. You can see why I'm excited to tee it up again," said Watney.
The women's golf team will kick off the season with its annual home tournament at Copper River Country Club Feb. 23-24. This will mark the Bulldogs fifth Fresno State Lexus Classic, formerly known as the "Kitahara Fresno State Invitational." The `Dogs have captured two of the four titles for their home tournament and senior Taylor Siebert won her first title last spring.
"We are anxious to get started," said women's coach Angie Cates-Moore. "We always look forward to opening our spring season at Copper River. Taylor will be defending her title and the team is looking for a victory."
"Similar to last year we expect to have a good spring season and finish strong. We have been working hard on the mental game and know the knowledge we've gained will help us win tournaments," Cates-Moore said.
