FRESNO, Calif. - For the second consecutive year, the Fresno State women's soccer team opens Western Athletic Conference play on the road. The Bulldogs kick off the WAC season at Hawai'i on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m.
The `Dogs finished last season in second place with a conference record of 5-1-1 before winning the WAC Tournament in Reno, Nev. Fresno State was picked to finished third in the WAC in the preseason coaches poll.
"We have had a slower development process than we would have liked this season, and unfortunately that has translated into a lack of results," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "But the great thing is that we have developed a lot from being a very young, inexperienced team. We have scored in four of our last five matches against very good, well-coached teams. We have three players that have never before scored for Fresno State now on the board, and several more that are capable and working very hard towards that goal."
Last year the `Dogs and Rainbow Wahine faced off in the second conference match of the season. The game ended in a tie, 0-0, after two overtime periods. The Bulldogs overall record against the Rainbow Wahine is 7-6-2.
Hawai'i is 4-6-1 this season and picked up two wins last weekend. Goalkeeper Kanani Taaca had two shutouts for Hawai'i. Britta Bourne scored two goals and recorded an assists last weekend. She scored the game-winning goal in the second game of the weekend and led the team with 20 shots in the two matches.
In the final non-conference game of the season for the Fresno State women's soccer team, Janna Sadowitz scored her first career goal against Saint Mary's. The Gaels scored two goals and held on to win beating the Bulldogs, 2-1. Chrissy Smith recorded eight saves in the match.
"We've played some of our best soccer in recent matches preparing for conference play and the team is poised to show their best game still," said Zwaschka. "When we finally click on all cylinders we will be very good. We go on the road with winning in mind and I have not settled for less from my team. Conference play will not change that attitude. We will attack and play positive so all the development we have been doing is not halted. I am confident that good results can come from this belief, and this team is ready and eager."
The Bulldogs continue WAC play at home on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. against New Mexico State.
