'Dogs Dominate in Day 1

FRESNO, Calif. - With the benefit of homecourt advantage, Fresno State rolled in the first day of action in the Bulldog Classic on Friday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs went a combined 9-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles action, for the first day of the tournament.
Defending Bulldog Classic champion Rikus de Villiers began his title defense with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara's Taylor Chavez-Goggin to earn him a spot in the quarterfinals.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals of Flight A for Fresno State were Tejesvi Veerepalli, David Ayoun and Remi Boutillier.
In Flight B, Fresno State freshman Hugo Verdi Fortin put together a 6-4, 6-2 win over Nevada's Kristian Kuharszky to advance to the second round.
"I was happy to get my first win in singles," Verdi Fortin said about the effort. "I felt pretty confident and it was fun playing in front of the Bulldog crowd for the first time."
Senior Taylor Leiby continued his unbeaten streak by knocking off Duncan MacDonald-Korth, 6-4, 6-2, and Deven Nerenberg, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, both from UC Santa Barbara, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Junior Siddharth Alapati defeated Nick Caledonia, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, de Villiers and Boutillier teamed up for an 8-2 win over Fresno City College's Joao Noriguiera and Kirill Sinitgsyn. Leiby and Alapati defeated San Francisco's Thai Tu and Asaf Cohen, 8-6.
Tournament action will continue on Saturday with doubles starting at 9 a.m. and singles at 10 a.m.
