FRESNO, Calif. - Two wins on Monday put Fresno State seniors Taylor Leiby and Mirko Zapletal in the ITA Northwest Regional Doubles Championship. The duo is now one win away from qualifying for the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
Zapletal and Leiby came into the Regional as an unranked doubles team, but knocked off five other combos, including No. 6 Anton Stryhas and Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State, on their way to the championship match.
On Monday, Leiby and Zapletal started the day by upsetting Stryhas and Harbatsiuk, 8-5. They followed that by defeating Washington's Alex Rosinski and Tobi Obenaus, 8-6, and earning a berth in the championship.
"It's been fun to watch, Mirko and Taylor play so well together," head coach Jay Udwadia said. "Tomorrow will be a great match."
Stanford's eighth-ranked Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thatcher await Zapletal and Leiby in the championship match on Tuesday at noon.
The winner of Tuesday's bout will earn a place in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by Yale in New Haven, Conn. on Nov. 5-8.
