FRESNO, Calif. - Juniors Rikus de Villiers and Siddharth Alapati each brought home individual championships at the annual Bulldog Classic on Sunday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
De Villiers also won a doubles championship with his partner Remi Boutillier, by defeating teammates Taylor Leiby and Alapati, 8-3.
In a unique turn of events, Leiby and Alapati went from partners to foes and back partners on Sunday.
The pair began the day by earning a spot in the doubles Flight A championship, with a 9-8 (7-3) victory over California's Zach Gilbert and Sky Lovill. After a short rest, they battled each other in the singles Flight B finals, with Alapati securing the championship with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory. Five minutes later they were partners again in the doubles Flight A championship match against de Villiers and Boutillier.
For de Villiers, it was his second-consecutive Bulldog Classic singles championship. The junior from Durban, South Africa, defended his title with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 win over teammate Tejesvi Veerepalli.
"It was a good tournament for Fresno State," de Villiers said in reflection. "I felt like I played pretty well and I am happy with the result."
Fresno State's Mirko Zapletal will be in action at the ITA All-American qualifying round on Monday. The team as a whole will next be in action at the ITA Northwest Regional Oct. 16-19 in Berkeley, Calif.
