Dogs Remain on the Road, Travel to Red-Hot Nevada
Fresno State is back on the road at Nevada this weekend. The Wolf Pack is coming off a 62-7 win at San Jose State Sunday night and is 6-3 overall, 5-0 and leading the WAC. The Dogs have won five straight games, three straight on the road, and are getting votes in the polls this week. Saturday's game will be televised on the Bulldog Sports Network.
About Nevada
The Wolf Pack possess one of the nations' most explosive offenses and do it by running the football better than anyone. Nevada leads the NCAA in rushing yards, 90 more yards per game than the Dogs who are No. 5 in the nation. Nevada is averaging 37.7 points and ranks sixth nationally in scoring. At 522.2 yards per game, Nevada is second in the nation in total offense. Leading the Pack is stellar quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who is 15th in the NCAA in total offense (279.2 ypg) and averages a WAC-high 8.3 yards per carry.
Against the Wolf Pack
Fresno State and Nevada began their series in 1923 and the Dogs have won 24 of the 39 games in the series, including eight of the last 10 games. Fresno State has won four of the last five games played in Reno, with the loss coming in 2005, 38-35.
Mathews Dominates NCAA in Rushing, Record Books Assault On
Eight games into the 2009 season, Bulldog running back Ryan Mathews continues to prove he's the nation's most exciting and explosive running back. For the sixth straight week he leads the nation in rushing, and not just barely. Mathews, at 162.1 yards per game, has a commanding lead (nearly 27 more yards per game) over No. 2 Toby Gerhart (135.22). He has two of the NCAA's top 10 rushing performances this season. He's powering a Fresno State ground game that ranks fifth in the NCAA in rushing yards. He moved into third place on the Bulldog career rushing yardage list (see page three for updated list). The most impressive part is that he's done it against good competition. His career-high 234 rushing yards against No. 5 Boise State was amazing considering he alone has accounted for 25% of the entire rushing yards the Broncos have allowed this season (919) through nine games. He extended his school-record streak of consecutive 100-yard games to nine He's put up these numbers despite not many fourth quarter carries. In the last five games combined, he's only had 21 carries in the final quarter, and didn't play in the fourth in either the Hawaii or New Mexico State games. He had two carries in the fourth against San Jose State.
