`Dogs Face Broncos at WAC Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team heads to Boise, Idaho to defend their WAC Tournament title in the 2009 WAC Tournament. The Bulldogs are the six seed taking on host Boise State on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m.
"We are excited to get our chance to face the host," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "They are a good team and showed they can play when they came here to Fresno. We will have to take care of the details. There is everything to play for to finish our season on a high note."
The two teams met earlier this season in Fresno and Boise State won the match, 2-1. The Broncos had goals by Kaylea Perenon and Ashley Walsh. In the final second of the match Claudia Cardenas scored keeping Boise State from a shutout. The Bulldogs overall record against the Broncos is 6-3-1.
Boise State won three in a row to close the regular season with a 10-6-4 overall mark and a 5-3-0 league record tying Nevada for third place. Last weekend the Broncos swept a pair of home matches against Hawai'i, 2-1 on Oct. 30, and San Jose State, 1-0, on Nov. 1. Junior Shannon Saxton and freshman Erica Parks lead the team in scoring with six goals and two assists apiece.
Since 2005, Fresno State has played in every WAC Tournament championship game. Two of the four years the `Dogs have won and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The last four years the Bulldogs have shutout five opponents during the tournament and outscored their opponents 15-5. Fresno State has had 16 WAC All-Tournament selections in the last four tournaments.
The top six teams in the WAC compete at the conference tournament for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The teams that clinched a spot in the 2009 tournament are No. 1 San Jose State, No. 2 Utah State, No. 3 Boise State, No. 4 Nevada, No. 5 New Mexico State and no. 6 Fresno State.
