FRESNO, Calif. - Despite shooting the third-best round of the day, Mike Watney, Fresno State's legendary men's golf coach, would like to see more consistency from his team.
The Bulldog golfers shot a 4-over par round of 288 in the final round of the 37th Annual University of Pacific Invitational at the Brookside Country Club in Stockton, Calif., today. That gave the Dogs a fourth-place team finish at 10-under par for the tournament. UC Davis won the event at 20-under par, followed by BYU, the only team with a sub-par round on Wednesday.
Adam Barkow and Bryan Hogan each played well, combining for 6-under par in the final round. They were the only two Dogs to shoot below par.
Hogan had four birdies and one bogey on his round, while Barkow had six birdies during the round. Barkow finished the tournament in fifth place at 7-under par. Michael Gideon and Hogan were tied for 16th in the tournament at 2-under par. Gideon shot a 73 on Wednesday.
Fresno State's outstanding sophomore Bhavik Patel woke up Wednesday morning with the flu and battled the illness with a round of 82. He was 7-under par and in fourth place heading into the final round. He finished tied for 33rd place at 4-over par.
Defending WAC Player of the Year Grant Doverspike, who place second in this same tournament each of the last two years, shot a final round of 79 and tied for 53rd.
"This was not the way we wanted to finish the tournament," said Watney. "We are playing decent golf but we are playing occasional golf. I'm glad we have one more tournament this fall."
The Bulldogs have not finished lower than fifth in any of their first three fall tournaments.
"We are Your Team" The Bulldog men's golf team concludes its fall portion of the schedule at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Pebble Beach on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 9-10.
