FRESNO, Calif. - Defender Katie Lee excels on and off the field for the Fresno State women's soccer team. Lee has earned a starting role on defense this year while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She was recognized by Cosida by being named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Third Team.
"Katie is a tremendous role model for the team," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "She plays consistently at a good level and shows that she is focused off the field on her academics. When you consider the straining time demands of a full-time student-athlete, her achievements in the classroom are nothing short of exceptional. She has a very balanced character and she's a terrific, modest teammate and one to look up to. She deserves this academic recognition."
Lee is a civil engineering major and in the Smittcamp honors college. She has started in 11 games and played in 12 this season. Lee has recorded an assist for one point and a shot from her defensive position.
The junior is the first Bulldog to earn the award since 2007, when Nicole Gutierrez was named to the third-team All-District squad.
To be eligible for the award student-athletes must have a 3.30 or higher GPA, compete in 50 percent of games and be a sophomore or older.
"We Are Your Team"-- The Bulldogs head to Boise, Idaho next week for the 2009 WAC Tournament.
