FRESNO, Calif. - Western rider Sonya Koch has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete under head equestrian coach Dr. Becky Malmo for the 2010-2011 season. She is the newest addition to next year's team and will compete in the reining event competition.
An accomplished reiner, Koch hails from Alamo, Calif. and attends San Ramon Valley High School. Koch comes from an equestrian family with European roots and is currently in Oklahoma City competing in a National reining event.
"Sonya is a very accomplished reiner," said Malmo. "Reining is a very difficult event to recruit. We are losing our stand-out senior Keri Blackledge and so Sonya is intended to fill Keri's position."
Koch's sister is also an equestrian devotee who competes in a different event.
"Sonya was definitely one of our top prospects for 2010," said Malmo.
