Bulldogs Finish Second at Home Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State concluded in the 46th Annual Fresno Lexus Classic at Belmont Country Club with two runner-up finishes. The Bulldogs shot 8-under par on the final day of the tournament to move from a two-way tie for third to finish in second place as a team.
"I have been saying we have a good team all year," said head coach Mike Watney. "It was great to display that during our home tournament."
Fresno State took second to Washington's 865, 1-over par finish. The Bulldogs finished their only home tournament of the year with a team-total of 870, 6-over, propelled by Tuesday's 280.
Todd Angel led Fresno State's home-town display with a runner-up finish of his own. Like his team, the junior from Clovis, Calif., made the move from third to second as he shot an even par on the final day of the tournament. Angel's three-round total of 214, put him 2-under par, and tied with Colin Featherstone of San Diego State for second-place.
"Todd has shown glimpses of brilliance in the past," said Watney. "He put it together for this tournament in front of his family and friends."
Angel led the field after shooting a 69 on the first 18 holes, but then dropped to third after a second-round score of 73. But Angel showed grace under fire Tuesday, shooting par on 16 holes with one birdie and a bogey to even-out his score.
Michael Gideon shot a 68 in the third round, leaping 22 places to finish in 14th. He powered through day, carding five birdies en route to a 36-hole total of 218, 4-under par.
"Being 14th in this field is great," said Watney. "Carding a 68 in the final round with the pressure on was just phenomenal."
Grant Doverspike was two strokes back of Gideon, scoring a 220 (-2) for 19th. Bhavik Patel finished Tuesday with a third-round total of 69 to move up 35 spots to 34th. Bryan Hogan rounded out the Bulldogs' team competitors with a 58th place finish on a 228.
"It was very important that we play well in this tough field," said Watney. "Playing these NCAA-bound teams helps us get closer to our goal, the NCAA tournament."
Fresno State returns to the green Sunday at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif.
