FRESNO, Calif. - Sharon Ayala earned All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing sixth in the 20-pound weight throw in College Station, Texas, on Friday.
The senior from Avenal, Calif., entered the meet as the nation's No. 10 athlete in the event and Fresno State's first female athlete to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championship since Melissa Price and Angela Daigle's appearance in 1999.
In the preliminaries, Ayala set a new school record in the event, tossing the weight 66-feet, 6-inches (20.26 meters) on her third throw. Her throw sent her soaring into the finals. After the finals, Ayala maintained the sixth-best mark, earning her the All-American honors.
"She's just a great competitor," said track and field head coach Scott Winsor. "Two weeks ago she was tied for No. 18 in the country. Then last weekend she moved into tenth and today jumped to sixth.
"Sharon is the kind of athlete we're looking for at Fresno State; one that is always working to improve and willing to put in the hard work to do it. I am so proud of her."
