FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Grant Doverspike has been named the Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for February 23-March 1.
Doverspike, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif. (Stockdale HS), finished in a tie for 13th place at the USC Invitational with a 1-over par 214 (69-75-70). He also pulled off one of the rarest feats in golf with a double-eagle on the 522-yard par-five 8th hole at the North Ranch Country Club. He blasted a 312 yard drive in the center of the fairway and then lofted a 5-iron, 210 yards to the front-hole location. The ball landed about 12 feet short of the hole, checked, and then rolled into the cup at perfect speed.
"Grant had a very solid performance in a great field," said head coach Mike Watney. "He is getting better every tournament."
The other men's nomination was New Mexico State senior Kevin Lozares.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The Fresno State women's golf team will be back on the road when they play at the UNLV Spring Invitational on March 9-10 in Boulder City,Nev.
