FRESNO, Calif. - Beiden Field was home to a pitcher's duel Saturday night. The Bulldog pitching staff struck out 10 Aggie batters, but fell to New Mexico State 2-0. For the second night in row, the Bulldog pitchers quieted one of the nation's best offensive teams, allowing only two hits. Fresno State is 1-1 in conference play and 17-15 overall.
This is only the second time the `Dogs have been shutout this season. The New Mexico State pitching staff held the Bulldog offense to three hits, the fewest of the season in a single game. Fresno State is averaging nine hits a game.
In the first inning sophomore Danny Muno stole second and third bases. The most stolen bases in a game by a single player are five, which has been done three times, most recently in 1989 by Tom Goodwin.
Junior Matt Morse sat down the first nine batters he faced in order. Morse threw a career-high 7 1/3 innings striking out seven and allowing only two hits.
New Mexico State scored first in the fourth inning taking a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs got out of a jam allowing only one Aggie to score and retiring the side with the bases loaded.
Sophomore Gene Escat came in relief and retired the eighth inning striking out an Aggie batter leaving two runners stranded on base.
The Aggies scored in the top of the ninth inning earning the 2-0 victory.
