FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State football team is just past the half point of spring football practice and accolades are already starting to pour in for coach Pat Hill and his program as SI.com ranked Hill the seventh-best non-BCS coach in the country.
Writer Tom Dienhart said Hill "has done more with less than anyone. It makes you wonder what he could accomplish at a "Big Six" school."
Since taking over the reins of the Bulldog football program Hill has taken his team to a bowl game nine times in the last 10 years and he ranks fourth all-time among WAC coaches in wins with 92. The nine bowl games are the third best mark in the history of the WAC.
"It's a nice honor for our program to be recognized among such a great group of coaches," Hill said. "I appreciate that many national media members continue to respect our program and realize the road we have traveled is very different than that of other schools."
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham was named the top non-BCS coach while Gary Patterson (TCU), Chris Petersen (Boise State), Troy Calhoun (Air Force), June Jones (SMU) and Skip Holtz (East Carolina) round out the top six.
Fresno State wraps up spring ball with a scrimmage at Bulldog Stadium on April 25 at 2 p.m. The scrimmage is free and open to the public.
Hill and the Bulldogs open the season September 5 at Bulldog Stadium against UC Davis. The other four home games are against Boise State (Sept. 18), San Jose State (Oct. 17), Utah State (Oct. 31) and Louisiana Tech (Nov. 21).
