FRESNO, Calif. - The Western Athletic Conference named Fresno State's Sharon Ayala the WAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for April 13-19.
Ayala set a new Fresno State school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 216 feet (65.84 meters) on the final day of the Mt. SAC Relays. The senior, who originally broke the record in 2008 and has reset it four times since, competed in the Invitational Division of the meet, taking seventh overall and second among collegiate athletes.
The new mark, a 10-foot increase from her previous record, leads the WAC and ranks second in the nation.
This is Ayala's first WAC Athlete of the Week honor for 2009, she earned WAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week in both indoor and outdoor in 2008. Ayala's award is the fifth for the Bulldogs this season.
Nevada's Amanda Moreno was named WAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
