FRESNO, Calif.- -
Newly appointed Fresno State women's soccer coach Brian Zwaschka met the media on Tuesday afternoon at the Josephine Theatre. Below are comments from Zwaschka from the press conference.
How does it feel to join the Bulldog family?
"I'm thrilled. I think there is an excellent opportunity for success here. With the forward thinking of the administration there is no doubt in my mind that this place has great potential."
What excites you about being at Fresno State?
The biggest thing to be excited about is that the team has already had success. They have won two WAC championships in the last three years.
Talk about keeping Christine Johnson as an assistant coach?
"Without knowing Christine much personally, I definitely respect her professionally. She has been directly involved with the team over the period of years the they have had success. She took a big risk on her own to stay with the players in the spring to make sure they were on the right track. That proves she is ready to be on board. She is a solid professional. She was a good player herself and she still loves to kick it around with the players. She is a great role model and I'm going to lean on her heavily because she is already a fixture with this program."
"If you ask me four years ago when I took my first Division I women's job period, I'd would have told you I'd be really surprised to be in this position this quickly. The reality is because of hard work and preparation on my end and being a solid professional with teams I've had an opportunity to work with along the way has helped me get to where I am now. I've had good mentors and administration that supports my own development and here we are now. I feel prepared and I am super excited that I am here."
What is your vision for the program?
"The program's potential is already at a peak. Realizing that potential is the job I am most excited about. There are so many good things about Fresno State and the current program. There are so many good things about our placement in the WAC. I have so many things to build on. It is a complete package. We have good academics here with an administration with great vision and there are great facilities. Everything is moving forward in the right direction. It is a perfect time for me."
