FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team beat Fresno Pacific, 4-3, in the final game of the 2009 spring season. New head coach Brian Zwaschka was very pleased with the Bulldogs given the short three weeks to get acquainted.
"Considering we had a short three weeks to get to know each other and start some training precedence, I was impressed with how they preformed against Fresno Pacific," said Zwaschka. "Fresno Pacific was a good team and gave us the kind of challenges that we needed, so I can take advantage of my only chance to evaluate the team in competition for the spring."
The first goal came from sophomore Janna Sadowitz, who scored off a penalty kick. Freshman Hannah Gilbert added a goal with assists going to Danielle Solich and Laura Dodd.
Sophomore Nicole Duff scored the third goal for the `Dogs. She scored unassisted when she connected on a rebound of a missed shot.
Fresno Pacific was able to squeeze three goals passed the Bulldogs. One goal was an accidental hand ball called in the box.
"Knowing that I only had three and half weeks to work with the team, what was most important was trying to establish a fluid attack and gain some continuity in that. We worked very little on defense and I was okay with conceding three goals knowing that. My only concern going into the game was scoring more goals than the opponent. It terms of the attack, I was super impressed because the whole team got involved in the attack. To see on the score sheet that we had four completely different scorers and the goals where built completely different from one another."
Sophomore Krissy Looney came through at the end of the game scoring the game-winning goal. Freshman Danielle Solich recorded two assists in the game.
"There was night and day difference from the first spring game to the last," said co-captain, Kendall VanDine. "We started working on the basics. He changed how we viewed and approach the game and now we are a more cohesive unit, we support each other. We have been playing better soccer since he came here and the last three weeks have gone very well."
Goalkeepers Kaitlyn Revel and Chrissy Smith split time in the goal for the Bulldogs.
"He turned us around in three weeks, which makes us extremely excited to see what he can do with our team given an entire season," said Revel. "We are really eager to see the improvement he can influence in the fall."
