FRESNO, Calif. - The WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships are underway with the first day of the multi-events complete.
"We're on target after Day 1," said head coach Scott Winsor.
Matt Bushnell led the Bulldogs out of the blocks with a bang, finishing in the Top 3 in four of the five events of Day 1.
"Matt did really well today," said Winsor. "He had some good finishes and has more in the tank."
The first event of the day, the men's 100-meter dash, gave Fresno State a solid start as Bushnell and Evan Young picked up third and fourth, respectively. Bushnell went on to nab second in the next event, with a leap of 21 feet, 8.75 inches (6.62 meters) in the long jump.
In the third event for the decathlon, the shot put, Evan Young snagged first by blowing away the competition with a heave of 42-0.75 (12.82m). Bushnell was less than two inches back for second.
The `Dogs barked loudest in the 400, the final event of the decathlon's Day 1. Matt Bushnell dominated the track by blazing a time of 48.93 for the top spot in the event. Young also medaled in the final event as he ran a 50.62, to snatch up the bronze.
Young sits in eighth after the first day, but Winsor is quick to point that there is another day to go.
"Tomorrow is Evan's strong day," said Winsor. "Look for him to climb the ladder."
On the women's side, Erica Embry completed four of the heptathlon's events Wednesday. Embry ended the first day in seventh among the 14 competitors. The senior rounded out day with a dynamic performance in the 200 dash, sprinting to a time of 25.66 for second, giving her excellent momentum for the completion of the heptathlon Thursday.
"Erica is doing a great job," said Winsor. "We threw her into this last week and she's really stepped up."
The Bulldogs continue their surge in multis Thursday at 12 p.m. PST.
