Patel Tied for 37th After Opening Round

FRESNO, Calif - Bhavik Patel is leading the Bulldog individuals after the opening round at NCAA Men's Golf West Regional. The freshman carded a first round score of 1-over par 73 to share a 12-way tie for 37th on Thursday at the par-72, 6,849-yard Lake Merced Golf Club.
No.1 individual, Grant Doverspike posted a 3-over par 75 to tie for 53rd.
"This is a very difficult course," said coach Watney. "It's a great field and our guys aren't playing bad. It's the first day and I expect the guys to make a big jump in the standings tomorrow."
Arizona State, the regional's No. 3 seed, registered a 9-under par total of 279 and holds a one-shot advantage over New Mexico, which finished the day at 8-under par 280. Texas A&M (281) is third followed by Oregon (282) and top-seed USC (285).
San Diego State concluded play at 2-under par 286 and is one of six teams to finish the first 18 holes under par.
USC sophomore Matthew Giles holds the individual lead after carding a 7-under par 65, one shot off the course record. Giles' round included seven birdies and an eagle.
Giles has a one-shot lead over Kennegard and is two strokes in front of John Hurley of Texas A&M, New Mexico's Steve Saunders and BYU's Brady Johnson. All three players turned in rounds of 5-under par 67.
A total of 17 players are under par following the opening round.
The 54-hole tournament continues with the second round on Friday and concludes on Saturday. The top five teams, along with the top individual not on an advancing team, advance to the NCAA Championships scheduled for May 26-30 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Tee times are set at 8:40 a.m. for Doverspike and 8:50 a.m. for Patel.
