FRESNO, Calif. - The Western Athletic Conference named 18 Bulldogs Academic All-WAC honorees Wednesday for the outdoor track and field season as the conference announced the all-academic honors for the spring sports.
The WAC honored a total of 130 track and field athletes for the outdoor season. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the teams' contests.
"The number one responsibility on this team is academics," said head coach Scott Winsor. "These student-athletes are proof that academic and athletic success can be achieved simultaneously. I am very proud of the work these students have put in to earn academic honors from the conference."
Making the academic awards list for the men's team were David Deal, Taylor Franzman, Tim Greene, Durran Moore, Mitchell Pfyl, Lyle Quillen, Frank Sanders and Evan Young.
Ten women represented Fresno State on the conference's academic awards list. Annie Bledsoe, Briana Cleary, Erica Embry, Cara Montes, Janev Morris, Vanessa Sautebin, Roxanne Sellick, Jacqueline Vazquez, Nancy Vizcarra and Grace Wiesmann earned the Academic All-WAC honors.
Nine of the ten women's recipients also nabbed Academic All-WAC honors for the indoor season. This is the first year the conference recognized indoor track and field separately from outdoor for academic honors.
Wiesmann, a senior, has earned Academic All-WAC honors in each of the five opportunities, receiving honors in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2008-09 (indoor) and now the 2009 outdoor season. Wiesmann was named a Second Team Academic All-District honoree by ESPN The Magazine.
Sellick, who runs for both the track and field and the cross country team, also picks up her fifth such honor. This is Sellick's fourth as a track and field athlete, having earned Academic All-WAC honors in both 2006, 2008 and the indoor recognition in 2008-09. She was named an Academic All-WAC honoree for cross country in 2007.
Cleary, a senior who also runs for both teams, earned her second track and field honor, fourth overall.
Third-time honorees were Embry (senior), Montes (sophomore), Morris (sophomore) and Vizcarra (senior), all of whom earned the award for the 2008 outdoor as well as the 2009 indoor season. Bledsoe earned her second Academic All-WAC accolade, having received her first in the 2008-09 indoor season.
Seven of the men's honorees have earned Academic All-WAC honors previously.
Frank Sanders picked up his fifth Academic All-WAC honor. |
This is Young's fourth Academic All-WAC honor, having earned it in each of his four seasons with the Bulldogs. Young was also named First Team Academic All-District by ESPN The Magazine for excelling in both the academics and athletics. Young, Fresno State's 2009 Male Bulldog of the Year, was one of only 13 selected for first team honors and the only student-athlete from a California school.
Moore, a senior, nabbed his third Academic All-WAC nod, picking up the accolade in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
Deal (sophomore), Quillen (sophomore) and Franzman (senior) were second-time honorees. Pfyl, a sophomore, earned the Academic All-WAC honor for the first time with the track and field team, second overall after his honor from the cross country season.
