FRESNO, Calif. - After a successful season on the course where the Fresno State men's and women's golf team placed second and third at the WAC Championships, respectively, the Bulldogs are now getting recognized for their efforts in the classroom.
The Western Athletic Conference announced today the 2008-09 academic all-WAC men's and women's golf teams. A total of seven golfers were named to the list.
The women's golf team consisted of six student-athletes, five of which earned academic honors: Hali Coppin, Lindi Covarrubias, Pia Escandon, Louisa Lies and Taylor Siebert. Fresno State and Idaho led the WAC in academic all-WAC honorees with five apiece.
For the Men's golf team, Brian Sunker and Michael Gideon excelled in the classroom and on the course to earn the award.
Senior Taylor Siebert has earned this accolade three times. This honor is the second for both Coppin and Escandon.
Covarrubias, Lies, Gideon and Sunker earned their first academic all-WAC awards. Sunker was given this honor after being named to the President's List in 2008.
A total of 607 spring student-athletes from the conference were named to this list, 64 of which were Fresno State athletes. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.
