FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's track and field added a decorated Fresno native to the 2010 roster as Breeauna Thompson signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Bulldogs.
Thompson, a recent graduate of Edison High School, will add to the sprinting prowess that has emerged as a strength for Fresno State.
"Breeauna is going to provide us with a lot more depth in the sprints," said assistant coach Chris Baptista, who guides the sprinters and hurdlers. "She'll be filling a void on our relays that we've been looking to fill."
And Thompson has the experience to fill that void. This season, Thompson ran the second leg of Edison's 4x400-meter relay that finished third at the CIF State Championships. She was also the CIF Central Section Champion in the 400 in 2008. The former Tiger has marked personal bests of 24.77 seconds in the 200 and 56.18 in the 400. On Thursday, the Fresno Bee named Thompson to the Bee All-Star Team.
This season, Fresno State won the WAC Outdoor Championship in the 4x400 relay and two Bulldogs qualified for the NCAA Regional in the 400. Sprinter and hurdler Latrisha Jordan of Ceres, Calif., earned All-American honors in the 400 hurdles after winning the WAC Championship and setting a new school record in the event.
"We're excited to be bringing athletes from the Valley to Fresno State," said Baptista. "Breeauna is going to help us take our team to the next level."
