FRESNO, Calif. - Seniors Evan Young and Grace Wiesmann earned ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District honors Thursday for achievement in the classroom and on the field.
"It's a great honor for these two student-athletes," said track and field head coach Scott Winsor. "Both Evan and Grace really deserve it. They both work hard and really represent what our program is all about - achievement in the classroom and on the field of competition."
Young was named First Team Academic All-District for excelling in both the academics and athletics. The criminology major balanced a 3.76 cumulative GPA while becoming a three-time First Team All-WAC honoree in the decathlon. Young, Fresno State's 2009 Male Bulldog of the Year, was one of only 13 selected for first team honors and the only student-athlete from a California school.
Wiesmann brought home Second Team Academic All-District honors. The senior amassed a 3.93 cumulative GPA, while competing as one of the top conference competitors in the hammer throw and qualifying for the NCAA Regional twice.
"These two portray our program exactly as we want to be known, balancing strong academics with great athletic achievement," said Winsor. "I am very proud of them."
Young is now eligible for ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-American honors to be decided later this month. The last Bulldog to earn First Team Academic All-District honors was Ryan Moore, who went on to earn Academic All-American accolades.
