FRESNO, Calif. - The Western Athletic Conference announced today that the 2010 WAC Women's Golf Tournament will be played at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. The Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau worked in tandem with the WAC to secure the neutral site for the event that will take place April 19-21, and will feature the teams from Boise State, Fresno State, Hawai`i, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico State and San Jose State.
"The WAC is extremely pleased to announce the move of our Women's Golf Tournament to Mesa, Arizona and the Longbow Golf Club," said WAC Commissioner Karl Benson. "Our coaches have stressed the importance of a neutral site in recent years and we believe Longbow and the surrounding community will provide a top-notch event for our teams."
The tournament is the first of two WAC championships that will be played in Mesa in 2010. It was announced this past May that the city would host the WAC's baseball tournament for the next three years.
"We are thrilled about continuing our association with the Western Athletic Conference by bringing the Women's Golf Championships to Mesa," said Aaron Muth, Sports Tourism & Development Manager who oversees the bureau's sports marketing efforts. "It will be another outstanding illustration of sports serving Mesa by providing vivid examples of brilliance via the fantastic student-athletes of the WAC."
Longbow Golf Club is home to a Ken Kavanaugh-design that was recently ranked as one of the "Top 100 Resort Courses in The Country" by Golfweek Magazine for 2009.
"Overall it's a good move for everybody," said Fresno State coach Angie Cates-Moore. "Financially it works well for all of us. The weather in Arizona is always nice that that time of year. When we played in Reno last year we were lucky we didn't get snowed on because it snowed the week before and the week after the WAC tournament. The same could happen in Boise or Moscow (Idaho) that time of year. It will be nice to compete at such a great venue."
Cates-Moore, who started the Fresno State women's golf program, led the Bulldogs to the 2008 WAC championship in the just the fourth year of existence. She has been named the WAC Coach of the Year twice in her career.
"We are excited about bringing the Women's WAC Championships to Longbow Golf Club," said Jay Larscheid, General Manager of the course. "It is a great opportunity for us to showcase our facility on a national level. We are looking forward to a great event."
The Bulldogs return to campus on August 23 for a team meeting and orientation. Cates-Moore will conduct the first tream practice on Monday, August 24, which is the first day of classes at Fresno State.
Fresno State's first tournament will be in the Golfweek Conference Challenge Sept. 12-15 at the Primm Valley Resort in Primm, Nevada.
