Bulldogs Open Season Against San Diego State

FRESNO, Calif. - Head coach Brian Zwaschka and the Fresno State women's soccer team opens the 2009 season this weekend on the road against San Diego State on Aug. 21 and Long Beach State on Aug. 23.
This is the second season in a row that the Bulldogs have started the season on the road. Last year the `Dogs kicked off the season at the University of San Francisco. Fresno State last played the Aztecs on Oct. 27, 2000 and the Bulldogs won, 4-2. SDSU leads the overall series 6-2.
The Aztecs finished the 2008 season 6-10-3 overall and 2-4-1 in Mountain West Conference play. Cat Walker led the team in points with 23 (10 goals and three assists). Goalkeeper Aubree Southwick played in 13 games with three shutouts and a 4-7-1 record.
The Bulldogs wrap up their first road trip in Long Beach against Long Beach State. The last meeting between the teams was Oct. 11, 2006 and the Bulldogs lost, 4-0. The 49ers lead the overall series 3-1.
Long Beach State finished last season 14-5-4 overall and 7-0-1 in Big West play. The 49ers made it to the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at the same regional as the Bulldogs. Lindsey Bullock led the team in points in 2008 with 21 (10 goals and one assist). Goal¬keeper Emily Kingsborough played in one game last year.
New Leader of the Pack
Brian Zwaschka became the fourth Fresno State Women's Soccer head coach on April 6, 2009. He brings a wealth of soccer experience and knowledge to the program after spending the last six years as an assistant coach at Cal, Texas Tech and his alma mater Grand View University. He was also a collegiate and professional soccer player.
WAC Coaches Pick Bulldogs Third
The Western Athletic Conference released the 2009 Preseason poll and the coaches picked Fresno State to finish third with 49 points. The Bulldogs earned a pair of first place votes. Utah State and Hawai'i were both picked to finished ahead of the Bulldogs in 2009.
Revel, Solich Earn Preseason Honors
The WAC coaches picked junior Kaitlyn Revel as the 2009 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The goalkeeper has been named first-team All-WAC the past two seasons. Last year she recorded 11 shutouts and in WAC play allowed only two goals.
Sophomore Danielle Solich was selected as a Preseason All-WAC defender by the WAC coaches. She played in five games as a freshman.
"We Are Your Team" - The Bulldog Soccer team will be heading south on Friday, August 21st to face the San Diego State Aztecs.
