FRESNO, Calif. - The pride of the Valley is on the line this weekend for the Fresno State women's soccer team. The Bulldogs host the second annual Valley Cup when they battle CSU Bakersfield Sunday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
"The team is primed for a breakout game," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We have executed in every aspect but goal scoring so far, and pushing so hard to win has meant conceding more than we deserve in search of results. Finishing our chances is the final piece of the puzzle, and when that happens we will be relieved, but also motivated for more."
The last time the teams met was in Bakersfield, Calif. on Aug. 29, 2008. The Roadrunners edged the Bulldogs, 2-1. Sophomore Molly Nizzoli scored her first career goal against the `Runners.
Junior Kaitlyn Revel has 35 saves on the season. Revel has 219 career saves and ranks in among the top 10. She needs 22 more to tie for second in Fresno State history.
Freshman Callie Hancock leads the team in shots with eight. She fired off four shots last weekend at the UC Irvine Invitational.
"We have not entered a single match with a negative attitude to just survive and the team knows this is the right forward thinking to play great soccer," said Zwaschka. "Our youth is a very temporary obstacle, and it is turning to maturity every day. This team is ready to realize just how good it will be. The team spirit is through the roof and that makes me very excited for what is to come."
CSU Bakersfield went 1-1 last weekend after beating Cal Poly, 2-1, and losing to UC Davis, 5-0. The Roadrunners have an overall record of 3-3. Sam Pena and Raquel Gervas are the leading goal scorers for the `Runners with two goals each. Kassi Massey leads the team with 10 shots. Goalkeeper Kim Gause 37 saves and one shutout this season.
