Leiby Continues to Impress

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Taylor Leiby extended his record to 2-0 on the year with a win on Saturday at the Wave Invitational, while the Bulldog doubles also looked strong.
The `Dogs faced Pepperdine in doubles, winning two of their four matches. In singles, Fresno State, facing Minnesota, won three matches.
Leiby, a senior, has had a particularly strong start this season, extending both his singles and doubles records to 2-0. On Saturday he picked up a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the Gophers' Julian Dehn and along with partner Mirko Zapletal defeated Pepperdine's Alex Llompart and Finn Tearney, 8-6.
"Taylor is a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles and is playing extremely well against some great players," Fresno State head coach Jay Udwadia said. "He is getting better every match."
Fellow Bulldog doubles tandem of Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier picked up an impressive 8-2 win over the Waves' Bassam Beidas and Hugh Clarke. Although he is unranked with Clarke, Beidas is ranked No. 23 in doubles with teammate Llompart.
"As our whole our doubles played well," Udwadia said. "Rikus and Remi had a great day in doubles and played really well with a lot of energy."
Also in singles action for the Bulldogs, Siddharth Alapati recorded a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over the Gophers' Phillip Arndt. Bulldog freshman David Ayoun recorded the first victory of his collegiate career with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win against Michael Sicora.
Doubles action will begin for the Bulldogs at 10 a.m. on Sunday against Arizona and Fresno State will face the Pepperdine singles at 2 p.m.
The Bulldogs return to the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center to host the Bulldog Classic Oct. 2-4.
